Boundary observations concerning divine election

From D. A. Carson's exposition of John 14-17 entitled The Farewell Discourse and Final Prayer of Jesus we are given 3 boundary observations concerning divine election which eliminate much harmful speculation:

  1. God is absolutely sovereign, as described in Scripture, but his sovereignty does not reduce man to a robot; man's decisions are significant.
  2. Man is responsible before God for all he is and does but his responsibility does not make God contingent.
  3. Theological errors can be avoided if one restricts oneself to deductions made by biblical writers and by considering how Scripture considers man's responsibility and God's sovereignty.
